Welcome back to George vs the Listener Crossword, your source for all things partially solved or solved but not understood (see last week for an example of that one!).

The run of new setters or newdonyms continues with Dilwitch – so we’re in unfamiliar territory.

Well, I read the preamble, and it looks like it’s all spelled out – repeated sequences get scrunched up and entered once.  Reminded me of another Listener – fiDlEDE by Waterloo.

There is a 1 across and so a chance for a 1 across test.  Anagram of LETTERS in the good old FT and we’ve got FLEET STREET shortened to FLETSTRET.

Crossing that – FREEPORT shortened to FREPORT and EFFUSIVE shortened to EFUSIVE.

Is this going to be mostly looking for double letters and shortening them?  A run through the clues and about half of them are one letter longer than the grid entry.  So there’s going to be a lot of repeated letters.

I’m usually an upbeat light-hearted guy, but with all apologies to Dilwitch, this was mostly a trawl of words with repeated letters.  The method of modification was rather nice when it worked – liked COCOONED becoming CONED and LONENESS becoming LONES, but there weren’t all that many of these radically downsized entries.  My last in was LEGGER which involved a lengthy poke around *EEGER *EGGER and *EGEER entries in Chambers.  Three sessions of poking around and we had a finish.

My grid for Listener Crossword 4154 - Downsizing by Dilwitch

I believe everything works out here so let’s call it a Victory to George!

2011 tally:  George 29, Listener 8.  Current streak, George 3.

Sorry this is a shorty but I don’t have a lot to say and I’m pressed for time.  Look back this weekend for a double dose of George vs the Azed Clueing competition and see you next week when Jaques hits us with a body of evidence.

  1. Sorry to be a killjoy, but your solution grid has an error: 40ac should be SINGALERY (singing-gallery), not WINGALERY (winning-gallery).

  2. Oh dear, now I have the upper echelon looking in – hi Roger, thanks for stopping by and I hope you don’t mind the comments on previous puzzles. George v the Listener is purely for entertainment value, so I give myself a cell or two leeway on entries.

  3. […] week we have Dilwitch… there’s only been one Dilwitch Listener so far, Downsizing, which had the gimmick of squashing repeated letters together – I said when I wrote that up […]
